Uoma and Arbor – two new perspectives on Finnish artisan glass table design

artisan glass tables

The Essis Collection expands with two new artisan glass table collections that explore artisan glass as a material through distinctly different perspectives. Created in collaboration with designer Netta Kandelin and interior architect Anne Elovaara, the Uoma and Arbor artisan glass tables highlight the organic character of handcrafted glass, the liveliness of the material, and the visible trace of craftsmanship — where the table becomes part of a larger spatial experience.

Both collections are strongly material-driven, yet their approaches differ significantly. Uoma emphasizes the sensitivity of fused glass, structural precision, and a refined contemporary expression. Arbor, in turn, leans into tactile craftsmanship, organic forms, and the raw presence of the material itself.

The growing appreciation for authentic materials, handcrafted details, and experiential interiors can be seen across contemporary interior architecture, hospitality design, and concept-driven spaces. Artisan glass tables offer an alternative where furniture is not only functional, but also contributes to the atmosphere, rhythm, and emotional experience of a space.

“What fascinates us most is how glass can feel both delicate and powerful at the same time. Uoma and Arbor represent two distinct ways of approaching artisan glass within contemporary Finnish table design.”

Uoma – a balance between sensitivity and structure

Developed together with designer Netta Kandelin, Uoma originated from an experimental prototype concept that immediately captured the attention of Essis Creative Director Essi Sundman. Through close collaboration, the idea evolved into a production-ready table collection where the organic nature of glass meets structural precision in an exceptional way.

The visual language of Uoma is built around the way molten artisan glass settles softly onto a refined metal structure. The living surface of the glass, the subtle details formed within the material, and the constantly shifting reflections under different lighting conditions make every piece unique.

What makes Uoma particularly compelling is the way it interacts with space. Rather than functioning merely as an individual furniture piece, the collection becomes part of a broader interior composition where transparency, light, and proportion influence the atmosphere and flow of the environment.

Uoma is designed for both residential and public interiors, including hotel lounges, restaurants, waiting areas, concept stores, and contemporary hospitality spaces where material experience plays an essential role.

“The idea behind Uoma began through studying glass, light, and surface, which eventually led to the first Poni prototype presented at the Finnish Glass Biennale. Soon after, we met Essis during 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen — and it turned out they remembered that one particular table from the biennale.

From that encounter, Uoma gradually evolved into my first furniture piece to enter production, combining Finnish manufacturing, craftsmanship, and the delicately strong relationship between glass and metal.”

Arbor – making craftsmanship visible through material

Arbor was originally created for a destination project in Lapland, designed by interior architect Anne Elovaara. During the project, the collection’s organic design language and strong material presence attracted interest beyond the original space, eventually leading to its inclusion in the Essis Collection.

Arbor highlights the visible trace of craftsmanship, the tactile quality of materials, and the natural liveliness of artisan glass. Every table is handcrafted, with each phase of the process subtly visible in the finished surface. Organic edges, living textures, and hand-finished details make every piece one of a kind.

In Arbor, glass is not treated simply as a surface material, but as an active element within the spatial experience. The collection introduces softness, depth, and material richness that shift depending on the surrounding environment, lighting, and viewing angle.

Arbor works especially well in interiors that seek to combine natural forms, craftsmanship, and contemporary interior architecture — from private residences to boutique hotels, hospitality concepts, and curated public spaces.

The Arbor artisan glass table collection is available in three different sizes, offering versatile possibilities for a wide range of interiors.
